Title: C3 Sting Ray and L-82 Description
Date: 12/20/1999
Question: I am looking for a corvette from about ''78 to '83, and I was wondering what the difference is between the regular vette, stingray, and L-82. If you could let me know I would greatly appreciate it.
- Guitargod1715
Answer:

There were no production Vettes sold in 1983 because GM could get everything in order for the new C4 generation so they waited and released it 1984. There is nothing "regular" about a Vette but here are a few things/options that make each Vette unique!

"Sting Ray" or "Stingray" is a name or a body style that GM started in 1963 as "Sting Ray", removed in 1968, brought back in 1969 as "Stingray" on the fender, and ended for good in 1977. The name and style was inspired by a race car called the Mitchell Sting Ray which had incredible fender lines.

"L-82" is an engine code that refers to a optional high performance engine. This engine was offered from 1973 to 1980. Each year has a different horse power rating.

Title: C3 Air Intake Manifold Mod
Date: 12/5/1999
Question: I would like to know if anyone has put a Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake on a C3 Corvette. It is a little taller than the stock intake. I will also have a K&N DropBase Filter assembly and a holley carb....Will this work???? Has anyone tried it? This is my First Vette And the first "big engine" I will have done any modifing on.... Please send replies to cyber_1979@usit.net
- Aaron Jestrab
Answer: We think this setup will work but it may be a little tight because you may have to use an adapter plate with the Holley carburetor. You should not have to use a adapter plate if you use the Edelbrock carburetor that goes with the Performer RPM intake and this should fit.

Title: L48 Performance Upgrade
Date: 12/4/1999
Question: Will the following help performance on a stock L48 350 and is the L48 a 4 bolt main? Edelbrock Performer RPM Package (Cam Intake Lifters), Holley 600 cfm carb, new double roller timing chain , K&N Dropdish Aircleaner (to clear hood), and Headers. I am just looking for a little more power than stock.
- Aaron
Answer: The Edlebrock package and the Holley will help the engine performance the most. The double roller timing chain will do nothing for performance. The air cleaner and headers will provide minimal gain, if any.

Title: Setting The Timing of a C3
Date: 10/16/1999
Question: 1979 L82 Corvette Coup w/ 4sp Manual Transmission & AC I am reading conflicting information on setting the timing. When setting the timing, does one remove the vacuum advance hose & plug both open ends or do you set the timing with the hose on? Chilton's says to remove it. Haynes say to remove it only if the firewall sticker says to. Thank you in advance (if you'll pardon the pun)
- Ron
Answer: Remove the hose to the vacuum advance and plug the hose. Set the timing to 12 degrees. Back the timming off one degree if the the engine pings. After the timing is set replace the hose and adjust the idle.

Title: C3 Sagging Doors
Date: 10/14/1999
Question: Please answer this for me. The passenger side door on my 1975 Roadster (L48) does not line up with the rest of the body. When the door closes the latch parts don't line up properly and are wearing incorrectly. In addition the door edge is pushed against the door jamb causing the edge to crack. When I had the rear bumper painted I asked the shop if they could adjust the door and align the seams. They said it couldn't be adjusted anymore and the problem was that the body had settled and caused the misalignment problem. Solution was to raise the body from the frame and replace the shims and pads. This seemed rather odd. I have known people who had convertibles and usually the doors sag from rusted frames. Only the passenger door is sagging. This was a restoration shop that did the paint and gave me the explanation. I got under the car to check for rusted frame but it appears solid. Is this answer correct and would it be a major cost (new paint etc.) to repair?
- D. J. Hoffman
Answer: When the doors sag on a shark it is usually caused by a worn upper door hinge. In some cases both the upper and lower door hinges are worn. Most parts suppliers sell these door hinges. This is not a tough job but you will need help because these doors are heavy. Also, some special tools may be required. Find a restoration shop that specializes in Vettes to fix this if you do not want to do it.

Title: L-82 Clutch Fork Pivot Ball Stud
Date: 9/29/1999
Question: I work at a local auto parts store and had a customer ask me about a clutch fork pivot ball stud. My answer," oh yeah we should have that". But all of my research proved me wrong. Any reference that I find says the L-82 uses a "distinctively different and not interchangable pivot ball". Could you shed some light on this for me?
- Brent
Answer: To our knowledge there are only three types produced. They come in short, medium, and long lengths. We have used a medium and long with no problems at all. If you use the short one there will be a lot of fork travel.

Title: 1981 Emblem Mounting
Date: 2/16/2000
Question: I own a 1981 Vette L48 4sp, that had the nose replaced with a fiberglass one instead of the stock material. This has no holes where the front emblem would go. Would you make any recommendations toward drilling holes to mount the emblem on the car?
- Adam Krolnik
Answer: The emblem is mounted on the front clip between the headlights. Most front clips should have the holes drilled in them. We suggest going to a Vette show or a local club meeting and find another 1981 Vette to use it as an example.

Title: 1981 Hydraulic Clutch
Date: 1/7/2000
Question: I own a 81 4 speed, does anyone make a hydraulic clutch set up for this car? I broke my left ankle and ever since the clutch is too hard. It is a stock GM clutch and I don't want to convert it to an auto. Please help, now I am driving junk and I want my vette back!
- INDYPace95
Answer: Sorry, have not seen a factory hydraulic clutch. We suggest contacting a race shop and have them build you a custom clutch. Find a racing catalogue or magazine and look for custom clutch parts. They may work.

Title: 1981 Maximum Horse Power
Date: 10/28/1999
Question: I had read a suggestion of yours on one of the many vette pages out there and saw you suggested for better performance to build your own engine. Well that is exactly what I would like to do for my stock 1981 Vette, However I would like to find out how much horse power I could put under the hood without compromising the loads on the stock transmission and stock rear end. This car is my primary car and I don't want to comprimze to much reliability for an increase in power. The current stock engine in the car as you probably now is only putting out a wimpy 190 HP... I was thinking of taking it up to 300 mabey even 350 with a complete rebuild, What do you think?
- David
Answer: This depends on the condition of your transmission and rear end. The stock automatic transmission and rear end should handle ~ 400 - 450 foot pounds of torque and ~ 300 - 350 horse power.

Title: 1981 Smog Repair
Date: 10/14/1999
Question: Is it possible to repair the smog system on a 1981 Coupe, 250 small block, that has a 400 CFM Carter carburetor instead of repair to the original quadrajet carburetor? I am trying to get the car smogged in the state of California, unfortunately all of the smog parts are in a box, including the original quadrajet and smog AIR pump and accessories, only the original air filter container is missing, plus the tubes to the exhaust manifold have been pinched off. What is the best solution?
- JDD
Answer: It will not pass emissions with the 400 CFM Carter carburetor. Even if you put all the parts back on and rebuild and install the quadrajet carburetor, it will take a lot of work to get it to pass. Check to see if you have the computer because this will also need to be hooked back up. You may want to think about buying a Vette that you know can pass the test.

Title: 1980 Edelbrock Manifold
Date: 2/1/2000
Question: I have a 1980 L-82 Vette and was wondering what the aluminum manifold on this engine would transfer to in the Edelbrock Performer series. The regular Performer or the RPM series. I already run the Edelbrock carb and want to switch to either of these manifolds.
- Steve
Answer: The answer to this question depends on what other modifications you plan to do to the engine. All the pieces must work together to achieve good torque and horsepower. You need to check the rpm range of each part you plan to use. We would recommend the Edelbrock Performer, part #3701 (EGR), if you are doing minor modifications. The Performer will provide good low end torque from idle to 5500 rpm, which is good for the street. The Edelbrock RPM manifold has larger runners and is designed to provide more power at higher rpm (2500 - 6500 rpm) for the track. Therefore you lose low end power. Also, if you use the RPM, which flows more air, you have to make sure the carb, heads, and exhaust can flow more air otherwise you will hurt performance. Call the Edelbrock tech line at 800-416-8628 for more information.

Title: 1980 Speedometer Swap
Date: 12/27/1999
Question: There is a 140MPH speedo available for the '81 and I would like to know if this can be planted in my '80 ??? The ol' 85MPH is still functioning but just doesn't belong, and the 140 looks a bit more trick than the 165Mph.
- corvettekid
Answer: Yes, the 140mph speedometer will work fine in your 1980. This is a very common swap so many parts suppliers make a speedometer that will drop into a 1978 - 1982 Vette.
- The Vette Pros

Title: 1980 Windshield Wiper Delay Quit
Date: 12/19/1999
Question: The windshield wiper delay on my 1980 L-82 does not work. The normal slow/fast speeds work fine. However when the wipers are placed on delay position or the knob is spun to the delay mode the wipers continue at the slow speed. How do I know if it is the switch or the relay or either?
- BlackVetteL82
Answer: The wiper delay control box under the dash console is probably broke. It might be the switch but it's not likely.
- The Vette Pros

Title: 1980 Automatic Transmission Down Shifting
Date: 11/3/1999
Question: I have an annoying shifting problem with my 1980 Vette with the automatic th350 transmission, every thing is factory. I had my mechanic look at it and he did not know the solution. He adjusted a throttle/transmission linkage, but it did not resolve the problem. When the tranny goes to shift from second to third gear it wants to down shift as you where punching it to go. If you don't let off or punch it it cannot decide which gear it wants to be in. Any thoughts if this is mechanical, electrical, or torque converter problem?
- Don Thomas Jr.
Answer: We don't think it's a torque converter problem. It sounds like the downshift cable or the linkage on the carburetor. It may be a bad vacuum modulator or the vacuum hose that is between the transmission and the manifold. We suggest taking it to a transmission shop.

Title: 1980 or 1981, Which Vette To Purchase?
Date: 10/24/1999
Question: I recently sold my "one owner" '84 and am considering another year. The cross fire engine was problematic as was the electrical "dash cluster, etc." and then there's that temporary steering assembly that I replaced almost in combination with the oil. I heard that either the '80 or '81 was a problem car, can you tell me which and why? Also is it better to advance a couple years to say '86 or '89 for less problems, or is going back to the '80, '81 your recommendation? Finally, Is there a site where I can read up on inherent problems of the various years?
- Sam
Answer: It's difficult to say which year of a Vette is better than another. Each year has it's own quirks and those are things you learn buy talking to people in clubs or at Vette shows. 1981 and newer Vettes have computers in them. This means more sensors and special tools to read the computer codes. I (RJ) own a 1980 that does not have a computer and this is one of the reasons I bought it. It is easier for me to understand. Buy the car you like and be prepared to maintain or repair it. It takes a lot of time and money to keep a 10 or more year old car running. Age is as destructive to Vettes as miles are.

Title: 1980 Intake Cleaning
Date: 10/17/1999
Question: I HAVE JUST RECENTLY REMOVED THE INTAKE OF MY L82 1980 CORVETTE 350 4 BL ENGINE . I HAVE NOTICED THAT THE INTAKE PORTS ARE CARBONED UP WITH HEAVY OIL AND DEPOSITS ON THE HEAD INTAKES . THE CAR HAS ONLY 40 TH MILES ON IT AND RUNS PERFECT . I REMOVED THE INTAKE BECAUSE IT WAS LEAKING COOLANT AT THE INTAKE GASKET AT THE LEFT BANK FRONT . I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE INTAKE DID NOT HAVE THE RUBBER GASKETS AT THE FRONT AND THE BACK OF THE INTAKE . IT JUST HAD GASKET ORANGE GLUE. WAS THIS FACTORY? ALSO WAS THE INTAKE EVER PAINTED AND WHAT COLOUR WAS IT . RIGHT KNOW IT IS ALUMINUM . BY THE SOUND OF THIS DO YOU THINK HAS BEEN TORN DOWN ? THE INSIDE OF THE ENGINE LOOKS GOOD AND CLEAN . THE REST OF THE CAR HAS BEEN UNTOUCHED AND IS IN WHAT I WOULD SAY WOULD BE IN ALMOST PERFECT CONDITION . THE HAS SAT FOR EIGHT YEARS . PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK ALL THE DEPOSITS ARE FROM AND HOW TO FLUSH THEM OUT.
- Percy
Answer: Yes, we think that the factory used a orange silicon sealer. We are not sure what color the intake manifold should be painted. Most intakes match the engine block paint color. My (RJ) 1980 L82 is painted aluminum. This may have been the way it was done for L-82's. The carbon deposits are usually from worn valve guides and valve guide seals. Use GM "Top Engine" cleaner to clean the intake manifold, part # 1052626. You may want to get the heads checked while the engine is apart. You need need to find the cause of the deposits or they will keep happening.

Title: 1980 LG4 HP Increase
Date: 10/11/1999
Question: I own a 1980 LG4, the California Smog Special 305. Although the engine has only 80k miles on it, I was considering a complete rebuild in the next 12-18 months...until i started looking through numerous "Vette" catalogs and noticed nothing on the 305's at all. Was this actually a Corvette motor or just a passenger car transplant and is this motor capable of being rebuilt with a bit more kick to it than the stock 180 horses, or will it swap out with one of the crate motors? What would you do if you?
- par4_17
Answer: It was a transplant. The 1980 LG4 305 engine does not have enough cubic inches to make it worth modifying. We suggest buying a 350 or larger crate motor.
- The Vette Pros

Title: 1980 and 1981 Spring Swap
Date: 9/21/1999
Question: I have a 1980 with a standard (non-L82) 1981 engine, the 1980 which is still in the restoration process has a multi-leaf rear suspension, I have a 1981 parts car which has a single leaf rear suspension. My question is there a major difference in the two, would it be worth my time and effort to replace my multi-leaf rear suspension or complete assembly for the single leaf from the 1981 model?
- Chris
Answer: There is not a major difference between the two springs and the '81 spring can be used in the '80. We suggest you buy a new fiberglass rear spring (Vette Products sells one) and high pressure gas shocks. The ride will be better than if you used the spring from the '81.

Title: 1980 L-48 Engine Modifications
Date: 9/17/1999
Question: I have a 1980 L-48 4-speed Corvette with 47,000 mi. I would like to 'wake up' the engine with some modifications. I would like to upgrade the top-end of the engine with new heads, camshaft, intake manifold, headers, carb and any other possible upgrades. I would like the car to be street legal in all 50 states.
- Tom
Answer: The modifications you can make to increase performance are endless, as long as your bank account is! We suggest buying a new performance engine, like the new Chevy crate engines. If you want to modify the original engine, then add a supercharger or buy a performance kit from any one of the many part suppliers or performance shops.

Title: 1979 502 Engine Upgrade
Date: 1/13/2000
Question: GM's new 502 Ram Jet is coming out in April. Since this engine has the same basic dimensions as the 396 and 454, I presume it will fit in a 1979 Vette. The concern I have is hood clearance. If you've seen advance photo's of the Ram Jet's induction system, it's looks mighty tall. Do you know if it will fit under a stock L82 hood? And if not, which hood would provide theclearance?

Also, I plan to mate the 502 to a brand new 6-spd, either T56 or Richmond. Or a rebuilt ZF, if I can convince ZF to sell to me outright. Regarding the 79's rearend, which I plan to refurbish and change to 3.70 gears, will it handle 567 (flywheel) pounds of twisty ?
- Ray Wong

Answer: No, we don't know if the 502 engine will fit under the stock hood. No, we don't think the stock rear end will handle that much torque. We suggest you get everything (half shafts, differential, suspension, etc..) beefed up. If you plan to use sticky tires and race your Vette this will be a must.

Title: 1979 Miss-aligned Front Wheel
Date: 12/6/1999
Question: I have a 79 vette which I just bought. The front wheel, if your looking straight on, is not centered and is much more to the left. The alignment is off to that side. Please help!!
- SOLEIL1744
Answer: Start by getting a professional four wheel alignment. If it is not that, your Vette may have been in an accident and the frame was bent.
- The Vette Pros

Title: 1979 Tire Size
Date: 11/22/1999
Question: What is the correct tire size for a 1979 vette?

Title: 1979 Rear Glass
Date: 10/7/1999
Question: My 79 C3 has a hatch type glass like those on the 82, this was performed outside the factory, directly, according to the manufacture date and the door sticker that the shop who did the mod. Was this an offered option from a dealer and or does it add to the overall value of the vehicle?
- Chris
Answer: No, the rear hatch glass option was only offered in 1982. What is of value to one person may not be to another!
- The Vette Pros

Title: 1979 Transmission and Tach
Date: 9/30/1999
Question: At the risk of sounding stupid, I must ask. 79 vette turbo 350 tranny has 3 gears? Also, newly rebuilt motor schould run at what temp. maximum? Again 350 ci motor. Reason is ,car at 3k rpm used do 70, now at same rpm {new motor} does about 60? The motor seems tight but less power than prior to rebuild. What do you think??
- Brian
Answer: The 350 turbo transmission has 3 gears. Your Vette should never exceed 230 degrees, anything under that is ok. It should run around 180-190 degrees will driving. The tach RPM should not change after an engine re-build. Your tach could have been damaged during the rebuild. There is a very important in line resistor that is between the distributor and the tachometer. This resistor is about an inch long and mounted on the manifold, next to the distributor on the passenger's side. If this is missing and your distributor is connected directly to your tach, your tach is probably messed up. Putting new tires or rims on the car can cause a different RPM to MPH reading.

Title: 1979 Clunk
Date: 9/29/1999
Question: I took a test drive in a 75 corvette w/auto trans that makes a clunky sound and car jerks when shifting from park to reverse and then again from reverse to drive. Is it worn u-joints for something in the rearend? The car has 104000+ miles on speedometer.
- Kip
Answer: It is probably the U joints but it could be something else. Take this one to a repair shop and get it checked on a lift.
- The Vette Pros

Title: 1978 Tachometer Froze
Date: 2/3/2000
Question: First problem is that the tach froze at 3500 RPM..Is there an easy fix.. Next is the wiper..only works at low and high..no delay.
- Johnny B
Answer: 1975 to 1982 C3 Vettes have a electric tachometer. There is a circuit board mounted on the back of the tachometer. This probably needs to be replaced because it has a short in it or it fried itself. Also, there is a small (1 inch) capacitor mounted on the manifold on the passenger side of the engine compartment. This needs to be in-line and functioning. It is normal for the tachometer to read between 1000 and 1500 rpm with the ignition off. It should read zero when the ignition is switched on. The wiper problem is probably the wiper delay box that is mounted under the dash above the steering column.

Title: 1978 Differential Maintenace
Date: 1/3/2000
Question: I have a 1978 / 350 that I just bought. The car is in great shape but after I drive it a while and when I stop I will hear a noise, much like a "Clunk" when I take my foot off the brake and start to go forward. It feels like it's coming from the tire area and at first I thought that my lugs were not on tight. My breaks work fine and it doesn't make the noise every time that I stop and start but when it does I feel as if the tire is "kicking out" on me. Could it be the Wheel Bearings?
- Rich
Answer: We don't think it's the wheel bearings but it may be part of your problem. Our guess is the Posi-traction clutches slipping in the differential. Drain and check the fluid in the rear differential housing and if it's metallic it may be a sign of problems. Get it checked by a professional. If the fluid is ok, replace it and add a bottle pf GM Post additive. Drive the car slowly in counter clockwise and clockwise circles for about 20-30 minutes to work the additive in. Also, check the upper and lower differential carrier bushings and the carrier bracket bushings. If these are bad they will cause strange clunking noises.

Title: 1978 Manual Transmission Pops Out Of 2nd Gear
Date: 10/5/1999
Question: I HAVE A 1978 VETTE L82 4SP THAT POPS OUT OF GEAR ON DECLERATION. UPSHIFTS AND DOWN SHIFTS IN ALL GEARS FINE, JUST POPS OUT OF SECOND IF NOT APPLYING GAS. I AM LOOKING AT A REBUILD KIT. DO YOU THINK 2ND GEAR AND THE SHIFT FORKS SHOULD BE REPLACED? IF SO WHERE CAN I BUY THEM?
- Mike
Answer: When this happens, 3rd and 4th gear may also have problems in the future. We strongly suggest buying the OEM parts from Borge Warner. Some of the parts you will need are the synchro assemblies, bearings, a small parts kit, and shifter forks. You may find more things wrong once you start fixing this problem.

Title: 1978 Front Bumper Replacement
Date: 10/1/1999
Question: I'm getting ready to replace the warped urethane front bumper on my 1978 with a fibergalss one. Any recommendations on the quality of what's out there. I'm looking at Vanacor's $245 versus the Trueflex one for $305. Any major differnce in the fit or quality of these two?
- user_name
Answer: You can shop to get the best price, but when it comes to fibreglass parts go with quality. Find the original urathane for $495.00 or the new flexglass that Not Just Vettes stocks for $375.00.

Title: 1977 Big Block Upgrade
Date: 1/16/2000
Question: I have a 1977 vette that suffered a complete engine meltdown/bad block. Can a big block be placed in, without too much trouble? I already have an engine and would like to put this 454 into the car. Where can I get any step by step or guidance for the job?
- Capricn10
Answer: Yes it can be done but it's a TON of work. It's easier if the 454 you are installing is complete. This means it has all pulleys, brackets, etc... All engine accessories must be changed and you will have to buy a lot of new parts: exhaust, sway bars, springs, engine mounts, radiator, etc... (too many to list here). We don't know of a step by step guide but I would try the various magazines or try to find a local club member who has done this engine upgrade. it.

Title: 1977 Twitchy Steering
Date: 12/17/1999
Question: I have a '77, L48 auto with 75,000 miles. The car wants to pull first one way, then the other. It's not severe, but is annoying because I am constantly having to make small corrections. The following parts are new: shocks, springs, control arm bushings, P/S control valve (I have adjusted this several times looking for the problem,) and tires. I have also checked the steering box, tie rod ends and rag joint, and had a 4 wheel alignment done.
- Greg
Answer: This problem may be caused by tires wider than stock (P255 70 R15). The wider tires will follow ruts in the road. The stock alignment specifications will not work if the tires are not stock. Take it to an alignment shop that knows how to adjust for wider tires. Most likely you will need more castor. Another cause is a suspension that is too stiff.

Title: 1977 Rear Axle Cover Replacement
Date: 10/24/1999
Question: I am currently restoring and upgrading a '77 L48 4-Speed, Could you please advise if it is possible/practical to change the rear axle cover, the original is broken, (surprise, surprise), without removing the complete diff housing.
- Motorama
Answer: Yes the cover can be replaced without removing the rear end. Drop the cross member and let the rear end hang.

Title: 1977 Rear Gears
Date: 10/22/1999
Question: I have a 77 vette rear with 3:36 gears that I was thinking of swapping into my 76 vette that is currently fitted with 3:08 gears. My question is, is this swap worthwhile, will I feel any (seat of the pants difference). At the moment the car will barely spin the rear tires. I have someone that wants to trade my 3:36s for a set of 3:70s,but the 3:70s are from a 1980 vette and I understand that these rears are different from older ones like mine. Would you know if these gears would work in an older rear like mine?
- Ken
Answer: The 3:36 gears will give you a small gain. We suggest using 3:55 or 3:70 gears. The 3:70s from the 1980 will NOT work in your 1977. The gears were the same up until 1979 and GM changed them in 1980.

Title: 1977 Broken Rear End
Date: 10/7/1999
Question: I have a 1977 with a 486 and a 8-71 weiand and I am having a problem with rear ends . I destroy them..... How can I strengthen them with out going to a dana or a nine inch ford? I have the competition strut rods, heavy duty pinon support the thick half shafts and a richmond 456 rear ... and I've broken every component I've mentioned what do you suggest???
- Tom
Answer: You have found one of the weaknesses of a 1977 Vette. The rear end housing, gears, stub axles, etc. were not made to handle that kind of HP and torque. We suggest buying a new 9 inch rear end from Strange Engineering in Illinois or Pepe's rear ends in California.

Title: 1975 Worn Steering Column
Date: 1/20/2000
Question: I have a tilt & telescopic column. It has about an 1" to 11/2" of play vertical and horizontal. I was told that there are 4 screws that might have come loose. I am looking for a gm assembly manual to copy the part about column rebuilds. I have restored everything else on my car myself and I really hate to pay someone to do it if I can. My local chevy dealer tells me that they don't have any manuals that old. Can you help me or point me in the right direction?
- William Atteberry
Answer: This problem is one of two problems. It might be the bolts located under the directional signal are loose. Or, the upper housing is worn. The upper housing is hard to find. This is a tough job and requires special tools. Check the online book stores, http://www.amazon.com/ , to find the assembly manuals and shop manuals for a 1976.

Title: 1975 L48 Power Increase And Transmission
Date: 12/18/1999
Question: I have a c-3 1975 L48 350 w/orig automatic trans. my questions are........... What is the best way to increase the horsepower on this motor without spending big bucks? I also have a transmission problem, if I stomp it, the transmission will not change, it just stays in first gear or so it seems however, if I drive like real easy it changes just fine! I just bought the car and noticed that the trans-fluid is leaking out on my driveway. What do you think?
- Brady
Answer: Try headers, low restriction exhaust system, Nitrous Oxide System, or new gears in the rear end. A transmission that won't down shift sounds like a problem with the electric kick down switch. The most common leaks in the transmission are the pan gasket and the selector seal.

Title: 1975 Hood Stuck Shut
Date: 10/4/1999
Question: I have a ' 75 stingray coupe and the hood will not open by pulling on hood release cable. I opened the hood before purchasing and had to manual reset the catches on the hood for it to close, they were dry and sticking. I don't think the cable is broken, just unable to pull hard enough to release catches. Is there a trick to open the hood like when the cable is broken?
- Kip
Answer: This is one of those hair pulling, tool throwing, and foul language generating problems that is easy to understand but a killer to fix! First, try removing the small panel behind the drivers side front wheel and reach up and try to pull the cable that comes through the firewall toward the rear of the car. This may trigger the latches and pop open the hood. If that doesn't work, remove the front grills, loosen the front hinges, and try to wiggle the hood while someone else pulls the cable. If these suggestions don't work, take it to a Vette repair shop.

Title: 1975 Windshield-wiper Not Spraying
Date: 9/29/1999
Question: I have a 1975 with the L48. The problem is that I can't get the wiper spray to work. The wiper works fine in low and high I checked all the hoses to the pump spray and there all clear. So I guess its some electrical problem. Is there a way to check the motor?
- Edward
Answer: The windshield-wiper motor and fluid pump are one unit so it is possible for the wipers to work and not to spray fluid. You should hear the pump trying to pump when the dash switch is pushed. If you hear it trying to pump, make sure the filter screen in the fluid bottle is not clogged. Also, check that the small plastic pieces on the wipers are not clogged. If the pump is not working it could be bad or the dash switch is bad. Check for power and ground at the motor and switch. There is an excellent article in the November issue of Corvette Fever (page 72) that explains how to replace the windshield-wiper motor.

Title: 1974 Engine Options
Date: 2/2/2000
Question: I'm in the market for an older Vette for my son to restore, and I've run across a 1974 that the owner claims to have an LT1 engine. I remember the 74's having L-82's and L-48's, but what is a LT-1, and was it offered in a 74 model?
- Greg
Answer: You have a very lucky son! The 1974 Vette engine options were a L82 250hp 350ci and a LS4 270hp 454ci. The LT1 350ci engine option was offered from 1970 to 1972. The 1970 LT1 had 370hp, the 1971 LT1 had 330hp, and the 1972 LT1 had 255hp. Check the numbers on the block of this 1974 to make sure what engine is in this Vette. It may have an LT1 transplanted from a 1970 to 1972 Vette.

Title: 1974 Problems With Modified Engine
Date: 11/27/1999
Question: I have a '74 Vette with a transplanted "Goodwrench" 350 and an automatic transmission. It has a race cam (don't know the specs but it does have a racey idle), performer intake with a Holley 850 (a 650 would not run on it), Holley ignition, and headers. Is there anything else that can be done to get a considerable increase in power? Would you recommend different rearend gearing? All the area mechanics I've talked to say this car should light the tires up -but it does not. It does not seem to get into any serious power until around 2200 - 2500 RPM or around 45 - 50 MPH.
- Patrick
Answer: The 850 cfm Holley is way too big for a 350 engine! This may be the root cause of your poor performance. The 650 cfm should have run well. We guess that your 650 cfm carburetor was bad or needed a re-build. We recommend 3:55 or 3:70 gears in the rear end for a very noticeable gain which can be measured by the seat-of-the-pants meter.

Title: 1974 Clunk In Rear End
Date: 11/21/1999
Question: I am considering buying this car. It seems to be in very good condition with one exception. When you shift from neutral into reverse there is a clunk and the rear end of the car drops down a bit. The transmission shifts into forward quite smoothly. Could there be a problem or is this typical of this car?
- Nancy
Answer: Get the upper rear end support mount (also known as the snubber) checked. It is probably bad. Always get a inspection done by a professional when buying a Vette! If you buy the car, replace the snubber with a urethane bushing. It will last longer.

Title: 1974 Ignition Timming And Advance
Date: 11/2/1999
Question: I've got a '74 corvette that just received a new motor. The problem I'm having is related to setting the ignition advance. I'm using the stock distributor with the gear driven tachomter, but I replaced the points with a Pertronix electronic converstion and replaced the vacuum advance unit with an adjustable type. I can set the advance so that the engine is very responsive off idle (by increasing the total initial advance), but becomes rough at higher rpm. Or by retarding the timing I can smooth out the high rpm's but at the same time lose the initial responsiveness. I can't seem to find a happy medium that allows for quick off idle acceleration and smooth upper rpm operation. Currently I have the vacuum advance set so that it creates the most amount of idle advance possible and I'm using the strongest springs to hopefully reduce the amount of high rpm advance. Do you have any other recommendations? Maybe restricting the mechanical advance unit somehow?
- Mike
Answer: BE CAREFUL! You can destroy your new engine if you advance the timing too much or if the engine is advanced too much under acceleration. We recommend getting your distributor re-curved by a professional. Doug at Corvette Repair can do it you send it to him.

Title: 1974 Power Brake Booster
Date: 10/23/1999
Question: I recently replaced my power brake booster on my 74'454, shark and was wondering if the push rod should be in contact with the master cylinder piston, or should it be slightly back of the piston or what?
- Rob
Answer: The rod length should be set from the rebuild or the parts supplier. You should not have to change it. The push rod should be just in contact with the piston.

Title: 1974 Performance Intake Manifold
Date: 10/21/1999
Question: Could you tell me what aftermarket intake manifolds you have seen fit under the stock 1974 hood? I am concerned that the performer will not give me the rpm range I desire for my new engine and I don't want to run a single plane. I am willing to change air filter assemblies.
- chracing
Answer: Any name brand duel plane manifold is good for all rpm ranges (Victor jr., Edlebrock). Call these vendors and they will tell you which will fit your 1974.

Title: 1974 Throaty Misfire
Date: 9/24/1999
Question: I have a 74 ragtop. Started a throaty kind of misfire when 4 barrel opens. Mechanic says I need a new cam. What do you think? Car runs fine. Just look at carb?? Also, I have 2 books. One says timing for l48 is 12 deg. btdc. Other say 8 degrees. Which one is right?
- Bob
Answer: It is very possible that your cam is worn. If this is the problem it should diagnosed soon so you do not damage your engine. Set your timing at 12 degrees BTDC. If your car does not ping then it's ok. You should feel more performance and achieve better gas mileage.

Title: 1973 Body Leaning Towards Drivers Side
Date: 11/16/1999
Question: My 1973 L82 leans towards the drivers side. i've had the car alligned, replaced the front coil springs, replaced the rear leaf springs, replaced all 4 shocks, replaced the sway bar ends but nothing has worked. i've checked the spindles and the body mounts. i've also spent a great deal of time underneath the car and nthing looks bent and it doesn't appear to ever have been wrecked. any suggestions?
- Nikki
Answer: It could be a bad or bent body mount bracket or an old or sagging body mount. The wrong springs or spring bolts could have been used. Check the ride height and if it is wrong it might be a bent frame.

Title: 1972 Rivet Pops
Date: 11/21/1999
Question: I purchased my '72 vett new in 72 and drove it for 3 years (76000 rough miles). From then on it was garaged and not touched much. I have finally undertaken mechanical restoration. I also intend to have it painted by a competent painter. While I am not undertaking a body-off restoration and do I intend for it to look like a show car, I would like it look as original as possible. Over the years I have noticed rivet pop bulges in the skin between the headlight doors and the front bumper. Have you noticed this in other vettes and, if so, how have you gotten rid of such bulges in preparation for painting?
- Saul
Answer: Yes we have seen these rivet pops on many early C3 Vettes. The bulges are caused when the rivets rust where they mount to the body. Have a body shop replace the rivets and repair the damage, otherwise, the rivet pops will never go away.

Title: 1971 Lower A-Frame Bushing Installation
Date: 2/3/2000
Question: I HAVE A 1971 CORVETTE THAT I AN REBUILDING THE ENTIRE FRONT END. EVERYTHING HAS GONE SMOOTH EXCEPT FOR INSTALLING THE LOWER A-FRAME BUSHINGS. CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME WHAT THE SECRET TO INSTALLING THEM IS ?
- SSSVETTE71
Answer: There is no secret, the bushings sometimes take a little force to install. Make sure the A-frame mounting holes are clean. Also, try putting the bushings in the freezer over night. This will shrink them a bit and they should be easier to install.

Title: 1971 Backfire Through Carburetor
Date: 11/8/1999
Question: First of all Im not a mechanic so bear w/ me! Just finished having my 350 sm blk rebuilt w/ alot of high performance parts. The engine runs Great except at high rpms it starts to break up and cough back thru the carb. My mechanic is dumbfounded and has checked EVERYTHING! Our question is now, could it be the ignition system? I am using a Mallory unilight ignition system. We have checked all(cam, lifters, springs) and its not mechanical. HELP!!!!
- Mark Miller
Answer: It might be the ignition system or a bad ignition coil. Also check the timing setting and make sure the the carburetor is not set too lean.

Title: 1971 Vacuum System
Date: 9/19/1999
Question: I'm restoring my wifes '71 Stingray and need diagrams of the entire vacuum system from under the dash to the head lights. Where can I obtain this?
- Mr. Miller
Answer: Try to find old copies of the NCRS guides, they are excellent. Another source is the various parts catalogues (Zip or Mid America) which have many diagrams. Also, the Chevrolet Shop Manual or Chiltons and Haynes repair manuals are excellent sources. Try your local library, auto parts stores, or the Internet book stores like, http://www.amazon.com/.

Title: 1971 Sitting For 8 Years
Date: 9/17/1999
Question: I'm responding to a brief 'how to' on things to check on a vette which has been sitting for a while. My 1971 350 coupe has been sitting since 1991.....I'm looking for as much information as I can find on all the things I need to check and replace. thanks....
- Paul
Answer: A Vette that has been sitting for 8 years will take a lot of work to get cruising again. Start with the fuel system because the gas has probably turned to varnish. Clean or replace the fuel tank, all fuel lines, filters, fuel pump, and rubber fuel hoses. Rebuild the carburetor. Change / flush all fluids: transmission, oil, antifreeze, brake, power steering, and rear differential. Replace all filters. Next prime the engine to get the new oil on the cam and the pistons. This is not easy. It involves removing the distributor, priming the pump, and cranking the engine by hand (find a manual for details). Replace the spark plugs and wires. Check brakes and bleed if necessary. Check all vacuum and rubber hoses for cracks. Replace any decayed suspension bushings. Lubricate all lube points. Check tires for cracks.

Title: 1970 454cid Fan On Temperature
Date: 12/11/1999
Question: I have a 1970 Coupe , 454 cid, with dual electric radiator fans. It has an adjustable Temperature Controller with adjustable differential for the controller. Where should I set the on and off temps for the best operation?
- Dave
Answer: We suggest to have the turn on anywhere between 190 - 200 degrees. With this size engine and the heat it creates, the fans will run almost all the time.

Title: 1970 Wiper Door
Date: 10/8/1999
Question:

Hi I actually have 2 questions I hope you can help me with. I have a 1970 Convertible 350/300 4 speed.

Question 1: Is there anything available which shows step by step procedure on adjusting the vacuum operated wiper door? It currently does not seat properly againt the windshield, it tends to sit high on the drivers side.

Question 2: I know I have some sort of vacuum leak because each time I start the car the wiper door opens by itself, after about a minute it closes itself automatically. I recently replaced the "switch" which will not let the door close before the wipers have retracted into their fully closed position, prior to this installation I did not experience this problem of the wiper door opening & closing on its own. I have checked the vacuum hoses to the newly installed switch and they all are snug. Can you tell me how to go about testing for a vacuum leak if that is what you believe the problem is?
- Tony

Answer: Try the GM Shop Manual for the diagram. Try a new switch, the one you bought may be bad or the wrong one. It is tough to find a vacuum leak. Here are a few ways to find a vacuum leak: You can use a 24" piece of fuel line or garden hose as a cheap stethoscope to locate vacuum leaks. With the motor running, place one end of the hose by your ear and move the other around the engine until you hear a hissing sound (be careful of the engine fan!). Or, try crimping off each hose one at a time and see if you can find the one that is causing the problem. Finally, take it to a shop that has a smoke machine that is designed to find vacuum leaks. The smoke machines will find any leak.

Title: 1970 Dual Electric Fans
Date: 10/1/1999
Question: First, thanks alot for your willingness to answer our questions on our cars. Much apreciated.

I have bought the subject car, and it has been modified with a set of dual radiator fans from a LT 1 engine (C-4 vette). They work great, but they come on at 180 degrees and shut off at 175 degrees., which doesn't take too long. (Im running a 160 degree engine thermostat). What would be the pros and cons, to changing it to 195 on and 175 off???
- Dave

Answer: Raising the temperature that the fans kick on to 195 degrees will not do much. We still think they will run constantly even if you raise the temperature to 195 degrees. You may feel a small, but not a noticeable horse power gain and emissions will be lower. Install a aluminum radiator if you what to see a big difference in the operating temperature of your Vette.

Title: 1969 Rim and Tire Size
Date: 9/24/1999
Question: I just bought a 69 and am trying to take it back to as original as possible. I think the rally rim for the 69 were 15X8 - correct? What would be today's equivalent for the 15 - 70 tires? The former owner put oversize tires (235 - 75/15) on 8" Craiger rims. There appears to be rubbing on the right fender in tight turns.
- Tom
Answer: The correct rims are 15X8 and P215 70 R15 tires should work.

Title: 1968 Transmission Identification
Date: 10/14/1999
Question: I recently purchased a '68 Corvette with the 350HP 327. It has a four speed. I am certain it is a Munsie, probably a M-21. The Corvette Black Book helps with numbers for the engine block, carb, heads, etc - but I can't find anything on identifying the transmission. How can I find out for sure what transmission I have?
- Richard
Answer: The transmission should have a number located on the drivers side by the shifter arms. This number should match the last 6 digits of the Vette's V.I.N. number.
