| Title: | C5 Common Problems |
| Date: | 10/11/1999 |
| Question: |
Took delivery of my brand new Y2K C5 last week. After 250mi., here are
my questions:
1) Been going real easy on my brakes, however, after the first 100 mi., they started squealing. Is this normal?
|
| Answer: |
Sorry, we just don't know. Other C5 owners have sent us the same questions as yours. It sounds
like these are common problems and need to be worked out by GM. Look through the old questions
and you will see other C5 owners with the same problems.
Contact the GM customer service center and ask to speak to the regional
manager. http://www.chevrolet.com/gmnav/contact_us/index.htm

| Title: | Brake Noise on a C5 |
| Date: | 9/23/1999 |
| Question: |
When I am driving slowly and I apply the brakes, I hear a
'snap' or 'knock' coming from under the car. It doesn't do it all the time
and the car stops fine. Of course, when I took it to the dealer, the noise
didn't occur. Is it a normal noise?
- Mark |
| Answer: |
Intermittent noises are tough to diagnose and without hearing it it can
be almost impossible! It could be the brake pads popping back in place
because the are traveling on a grooved rotor. Think of how a needle
follows the grooves on a vinyl record. This usually happens if the
rotor or pads are worn and grooves form. The fix is to get new pads and
the rotor re-surfaced on a non directional grinder.

| Title: | The Y2K Ride |
| Date: | 9/16/1999 |
| Question: |
HAVE Y2K WITH 5OO MILES WHAT IS THE EASIEST WAY TO IMPROVE THE RIDE?
- Ray |
| Answer: | I'm assuming you mean that the ride is too stiff. The main things that
contribute to a Vette's stiff ride are the shocks, springs, and tires.
Softer springs and non performance shocks may help, if you can find
them. A tire with a larger side wall and a narrow footprint may help.
The smaller a tire's side wall and the wider it is, the stiffer the ride!
Also, the C5's were designed with a very rigid frame which can also
contribute to the stiff ride. Besides buying a different car, there is
not much else you can do.

| Title: | 2000 Significant Power Increase |
| Date: | 12/7/1999 |
| Question: |
As the lucky owner of a brand new C5 conv. triple black, 6 sp. I have read every mag. and
book I could find, as this is my first Corvette. There seems to be so many different
articles on increasing the HP. What are the most significant things that one might do
for increased performance. I've already done the exhaust and air filter. What might be
the next steps?
- Bob Hughes |
| Answer: |
Building a high horse power engine is an art! There are many things that need to work in
tandem to yield maxium horse power. Individual items create minor gains, it's the whole package
that makes the power. The "most significant things" to increase HP are, internal engine work, a supercharger, or a nitrous oxide system.
The internal engine modification, if done right, can provide the most benefit but at the most cost. The supercharger (see answer below)
add a lot of power for the buck and they are bolt on. The NOS option will give a lot of power for the money but can wear
an engine quickly.

| Title: | 2000 Supercharger |
| Date: | 11/3/1999 |
| Question: |
I have looked all over the net and catalogs trying find a super-charging kit
for my 2000 coupe. so far I have found nothing, is this even possible. I
would like to upgrade the HP to 400 or better do you know of a way to do
that without extensive engine work.
- Larry Black |
| Answer: |
More and more aftermarket companies are making performance products for the C5.
Try Carroll Supercharging Company.
They claim a 450 bhp gain and 382 bhp gain at the rear wheels.

| Title: | 1999 Belt Tensioner Rattle |
| Date: | 10/1/1999 |
| Question: |
I have a '99 Corvette I took to the local dealer because of a belt
tensioner rattle. They changed the power steering pump, this did not
fix the problem. They ordered a new belt tensioner and installed it. This
did not fix the problem. They haver checked 4 other '99
Corvettes that have the same problems that were not reported by the owners. I called a
dealer in Dallas, they reported to me this is a problem on all '99
Corvettes and they do not know the answer to the problem. My car has
5,000 miles and the problem started at slow speeds in parking lots when
the steering wheel was turned all the way left or right. Now I get the
noise even when I shift into drive sitting still.

| Title: | 1998 Dead Battery |
| Date: | 2/14/2000 |
| Question: |
I have a 1998 C5 Coupe. I have had a recurring problem with the battery
being dead after I leave the car for a week or two. The dealer has replaced
the battery twice (suspecting the Delco problem) to no avail. They said
they put a meter on it and could not find the draw. Any ideas?
- Tony Church |
| Answer: |
We suggest finding a new dealer. There is a draw on the battery and this
needs to be found.

| Title: | 1998 Supercharger and Engine Wear |
| Date: | 1/15/2000 |
| Question: |
I have a RED '98 C5 with automatic transmission. It does ok, but it's not like driving a
6 speed. Is there a turbo that can be had for this model? I was considering the supercharger
but really didn't want to spend that much for something that won't be utilized that often
(yea, right). Does the supercharger greatly accelerate the wear on the engine?
- Lester Bowers |
| Answer: |
Yes a supercharge can accelerate the life of your engine. Performance has a price!
How much wear is up to you. The higher the boost the more wear, but the greater the
performance gain. Use 6 lbs of boost if you want to save some wear on the engine. Also,
invest in some internal engine work that will increase airflow.

| Title: | 1998 Muffler Upgrade |
| Date: | 1/13/2000 |
| Question: |
I HAVE A 1998 C5 AND WOULD LIKE TO PUT SOME BETTER SOUNDING MUFFLERS ON THE
CAR. WHAT IS THE BETTER CORSA,FLOW MASTER OR BORLA. WANT NICE SOUND NOT A HOT
ROD. HAD CHAMBERED ON MY 95 AND WAY TO MUCH RESONANCE. WHAT DO YOU THINK?
- JDavid2008 |
| Answer: |
Sound is a personal preference! The Corsa and Borla sound about the same. The Flow Master have good exhaust flow but
tend to be a loud and resonate. Try to find a local club member who has modified their
C5 and ask them to fire it up for a listen.

It's hard to pinpoint the exact number of Vettes built with specific option
combinations. You could try this page on the C5 registry:

| Title: | 1997 Shakin' When Brakin' |
| Date: | 10/3/1999 |
| Question: |
I own a '97 350, V-8, 345 hp coupe, with almost 17,000 miles. (It's
great!) Recently, I've noticed when braking at just about any speed, the 'Vette
is shaking, shimeying pretty good as I slow it down. I haven't hit any curbs,
run off the road, nor carreened a speed bump recently. What gives?
- Sgb3072 |
| Answer: |
It sounds like a bad or warped rotor. Get the brakes checked.
